Ex Cyclone Fehi - precautionary evacuations advised in Waitara east beach overnight
The precautionary evacuation of residents in Howard Street (East Quay) and Waitara East Beach is still in place. People in the area are advised to evacuate their homes overnight due to possible storm surge combined with high tide around midnight tonight which may cause flooding.
Evacuees are advised to stay with family or friends overnight or contact Taranaki Civil Defence on 0800 900 049 if they have any concerns. People should take identification, important documents and essential items. People should also take their pets with them.
The public are advised to keep out of the area overnight. The Police will continue to monitor the area throughout the night.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand are going door-to-door to advise residents in the area.
A coastal storm surge and high winds combined with a spring tide caused localised flooding on the east bank at the Waitara River mouth at midday today. Precautionary evacuations were advised by Fire and Emergency NZ.
The winds and storm surge are expected to ease later tonight.
